Driving Rules and Regulations in Alberta

Alberta Graduated Drivers License Program

Class 7 - Must be at least 14 years of age to pass Class 7 Learners

  • Must be accompanied by a fully licensed Non-GDL Driver when practiscing driving
  • Can not drive between 12am-5am
  • Zero Alcohol Tolerance for this Class
  • Every person must wear a seat belt
  • At 8 demerits license will be suspended
Class 5 GDL - must be at least 16 years of age and have Class 7 minimum 12 months
  • Zero Alcohol Tolerance for this Class
  • Every person must wear a seat belt
  • At 8 demerits license will be suspended
  • Cannot accompany a Class 7 Learner to practise driving
  • Can not upgrade to commercial license
Class 5 non-GDL- must be at least 18 years of age and be suspension free for the previous 12 months
  • Can upgrade to a commercial license
  • Can accompany a Class 7 learner
  • At 15 demerits license will be suspended
